Liquid fuel with wick: Burns soot-free and odorless.
This fuel is made from pure diethylene glycol (DEG), which is also used as an antifreeze in radiators.
By using a wick, DEG can be vaporized and burned despite its relatively high flash point of 143°C.
Hendi sells this fuel in sealed, non-refillable metal cans of 145 or 200 grams.
The burning time of a can is inversely proportional to the intensity of its flame, which can be adjusted by varying the exposed height of the wick.
Use: Place directly under a chafing dish or other heating appliance suitable for use with open flames from liquid fuel.
Burning time: ± 4 hours for 145 gram cans, ± 6 hours for 198 and 200 gram cans.
Heat output: approximately 50% of ethanol-based gel fuel.
Advantages over gel fuel:
- Safer to use. No hazardous refilling. The flame is more visible and predictable.
- Cans remain cool enough to touch safely. Can be used without a holder.
- Safer in case of accidents. Any spill will be minimal and hardly flammable.
- Properly re-sealable and reusable.
- Easy to extinguish by blowing or placing the cap.
- Burning cost now comparable to ethanol-based gel.
- Less intense flame. Reduces the possibility of chafing dish water pans running dry.
WARNING:
Diethylene glycol is a dangerous irritant.
Always wash hands after skin contact with the liquid: preferably wear latex gloves when adjusting the wick height.
A safety data sheet (SDS) is available on the Hendi website; it is recommended to print a copy and keep it nearby.
